Join bi-weekly CrossFit for Speaking sessions where you and other ODPS members go from a blank page to a completed rough draft in 90 minutes. It’s fast, it’s intense, but most of all, it’s fun. Your cohort will be divided into small groups who meet once a week for peer collaboration and live feedback alongside one of our expert facilitators.

Over the last 8 years I've been a trial lawyer that led 102 jury trials, Persuasive Speaking teacher at SMU Law School, and coach of the National Mock Trial team.

I'm also the founder of Performative Speaking where I take all the lessons learned over those past 8 years to bring them to the On Deck community to help you become a powerful and persuasive speaker in every walk of life.

Getting Started

Speaking fundamentals

The most basic thing to understand as a speaker is how to connect with your audience. Here you will learn the best strategies to start creating a deep emotional connection with your audience. This means utilizing ideas like inspiration lists, understanding why other speakers find success, and how to begin reverse engineering your own life experiences to create hooks in your audience. 

The biggest mistake speakers make is thinking it’s about them. Speaking fundamentals shifts that mindset and helps you go deep into the mind of your audience for any type of speech. A keynote audience is different from a boardroom of executives and each situation requires a different approach for success.

Essential strategies

Knowing what to do is only helpful if you can learn how to do it. In essential strategies you will talk a walk through the best practices and techniques that elite speakers use to move their audience to action. You’ve heard how JFK, MLK jr, and Brene Brown deliver their speeches. The tactics they use include pacing, rhythm, and tone. They are masters of silence and techniques like floating opposites and this or that. 

When you combine Speaking Fundamentals with Essential Strategies you will make music with your voice. Think of this part as the crash course into thousands of years of oratory best practices from Socrates, Aristotle, to current greats like Barack Obama or Amanda Gorman. You will learn what makes them so successful and harness those same strategies as you move forward as a VC, Founder, Executive, and Leader.
Core Skills

Storytelling frameworks

Stories rule the world. It’s that simple. The Illiad and the Odyssey have survived for thousands of years to teach lessons entirely because it’s told in a story. You may not be Homer, but in this section you will learn exactly what the most effective frameworks to use are and how to implement them. This isn’t a formula, it’s a framework because you need the freedom to express your authentic story. 

Learn how to tell your go-to story, your company story, and your origin story. This section dives deep into the ingredients that make a great story and how to deliver them. You won’t say the car any longer, you will let your audience feel it and see the car in all it’s glory. A new way of connecting with strangers at a networking event, building credibility for that TED talk, or even just creating laughs with your friends at the dinner table will all be possible because of this section.

Building a spectacular presentation

Forget all of those boring presentations and embrace a new way of thinking. Every presentation will be a time for you to shine and wow your audience. Develop the best practices to hook your audience and create intrigue and curiosity. Help them lean into your pitch and think to themselves “I want to know more.” 

Craft the perfect hook using proven methods to make sure your presentation starts strong every single time. After all, people judge a book by its cover. Focus on the proper arc in your presentation to create a narrative that plays to the imagination of your audience and hep them become a character in your presentation. This is the perfect place to learn the 5 elements of a great presentation...and there will also be experts to help with how to develop the slide deck to maximize your impact. You’ll have your audience wanting more presentations from you.

Developing your communication style

You have a voice. The world needs to hear it and this is the place to develop it. Go through exercises that will help you figure out the type of speaker you want to be. This is a deep dive into who you are as a person and how that manifests as a speaker. 

The most exciting part of this is the holistic approach ODPS is taking. Learn not only from real examples of different styles but also work with experts in the field of voice coaching and authenticity. Not every speaker is loud and over the top. Not every speaker is soft and intimate. You won’t be asked to fit in a box. Instead you will find your full voice and use it to amplify your message and vision to the world.

Who should apply?

To be a good fit for ODPS, you are probably:

  • A founder that wants to attract the right funding, talent, and customers for your business
  • An operator, product manager or project manager looking to take on more leadership roles your organization
  • An online personality that frequently creates content or speaks on YouTube videos or podcasts
  • A Director, VP, or executive trying to make that next step into the C-suite 
  • A coach who needs to clearly communicate with their clients and inspire action
  • Eager to be an active participant and contributor in a growing community, as much of the value of On Deck comes from the network and peer-to-peer connections.

What does it cost?

Joining On Deck Performative Speaking is $2,990.

For this first inaugural cohort, we’re offering the program at an early-bird rate of $2,990, with the cost rising for subsequent cohorts.

Are there scholarships or financing options available?

Yes!
Our goal is to make ODPS accessible to the absolute best talent, no matter their situation.

While many eligible applicants do have the means to support themselves, many others don’t. We’re excited to be able to offer scholarships thanks to the generosity of alumni and partners.

There are no fees to apply so please submit an application to be considered for ODPS — we only ask about financial assistance requirements after fellows have been accepted in order to avoid discrimination during the evaluation process.

What is the time commitment?

Between attending your workshops and giving peer feedback, you should expect your speaking workshop to take up around three to four hours a week.

Beyond workshops, ODPS is a choose-your-own-adventure buffet. You get out what you put in: often, the biggest contributors are also the biggest beneficiaries.

Depending on your schedule and interests, you could choose to:

* Attend everything and “gorge” yourself on knowledge until you explode
* Tune in at your leisure to attend sessions that interest you
* Or just search the directory and connect with interesting people one-on-one

Most ODPS Fellows have full-time jobs, so our programming is designed with that in mind.

Is this a fully remote program?

Yes: ODPS will be run entirely remotely. This enables participation from all corners of the world. We’ve spent the past few ODF cohorts mastering the playbook for building remote communities and relationship building online, and will apply the same approach here.

Post-COVID, we’ll return to organizing offline programming like dinners, small gatherings, and retreats, but the core Fellowship will remain a remote-first experience.

How long will I have access to the community?

After the fellowship, you’ll retain access to your cohort and be able to subscribe to membership for continued access to the On Deck ecosystem.

What are the demographics of the fellowship?

We’re aiming to build a cohort that is diverse across race/ethnicity, gender, sexuality, national origin, professional background, age, viewpoint, and subject matter—you name it!

Since this is the first cohort of ODPS, we don’t yet have specific demographics for this program, but we released a demographic breakdown for ODF5 that can serve as a useful comparison.

What are the guiding values of On Deck?

On Deck lives by four core guiding values, crucial to the culture we strive to foster in the community:

* Service: On Deck is bigger than any one person. For this community to thrive, it must be driven by a spirit of service to others. Be generous with your time, knowledge, and support. Karma has a way of finding its way back.

* Sacredness: By default, everything is off the record. Many in this group are searching for something deeper in their lives or making big transitions, and others may not yet have publicly shared this with friends, family, or employers. Please honor that, and avoid sharing anything you learn about each other without explicit permission.

* Respect: You are all now part of the On Deck family. You’re all embarking on what will surely be a rollercoaster of a journey — but you’re in this shared experience together. With that comes a sense of responsibility: be inclusive, stick together, and respect one another.

* Gratitude: have a spirit of curiosity and gratitude. We’re bringing together a group of fascinating people, most of whom likely have never met each other…how amazing is that? Get to know each other, and make the cohort what you want it to be for yourself.
